Both of the Jamesville-DeWitt soccer teams are well-positioned to pursue banners as the Section III Class A playoffs near its start. In particular, the girls Red Rams earned a major boost of confidence Wednesday by going to Cortland and beating the two-time defending champion Cortland Purple Tigers 3-2. This was payback for Sept. 29, when Cortland gave then-unbeaten J-D its first loss of the season — not to mention the fact that it was the Purple Tigers who beat the Rams in the 2008 sectional final. Here, J-D and Cortland played to a 1-1 first half, then traded goals again in the second half. Continually breaking free, Tessa Devereaux got one goal and assisted on the other, by younger sister Maddy, while the Purple Tigers countered with goals from Aubrey VanGorder and Erika Faberzak. But with 8:16 left in regulation, Tessa Devereaux converted again, and that would prove to be the game-winner. Sarah Gianni finished with four saves. Two days earlier, J-D made good use of its regular-season home finale last Monday, toying with Mexico in a 5-0 shutout of the Tigers. A pair of freshmen hurt Mexico the most, as Jessica Holmes and Maddy Devereaux each finished with two goals, and Holmes added an assist. Tessa Devereaux had two assists to go with her lone tally, while Emily Elbers picked up one assist. Before the girls got there, J-D’s boys team had a good time in Cortland Monday afternoon, hitting double-digit wins by blanking the Purple Tigers 3-0. Taking charge in the early going, the Red Rams led 2-0 at halftime and didn’t give up control. Robbie Elbers, Noel Williams and Jimmy Fazio each scored, with Zander El-Hindi, Austin Roney and Tim Kendrick picking up assists.
