By equally narrow margins, three local girls tennis teams swept the Section III team tournament finals on Tuesday at Utica Parkway Courts. Fayetteville-Manlius rules in Class A again – but not before fending off Baldwinsville in a 4-3 decision. In Class B, Christian Brothers Academy upset unbeaten Skaneateles by that same 4-3 margin, while Manlius-Pebble Hill edged Beaver River 3-2 to win the Class C title. F-M has not lost a head-to-head match to any Section III foe since 1992, but Baldwinsville displayed little fear, especially since it had scared the Hornets in a 5-2 match eight days earlier. Sienna Susko nabbed F-M’s lone singles point in the final, beating Becky Guzzo 6-3, 7-6. Meanwhile, Lauren Schaefer lost to Calli Nizamis 6-0, 7-5, and Olivia Calancie took a 7-5, 6-4 defeat to Kelly Falconer. Though Carly Romano and Allison Vizgaitis lost in three sets to Nicole Leader and Amari Pollard 1-6, 6-4, 7-5, the Hornets won the other three doubles matches in straight sets. Maria Mintskovsky and Katie Muller rolled past Rachel Taylor and Lauren Mautz 6-1, 6-0. Rhiannon Iorio and Shelby Smith swept Katy Andersen and Catherine Corsito 6-3, 6-3, while Ellen Choi and Meghan Muraco got a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sarah McCarthy and Kalli Alberici. CBA had lost to Skaneateles in the regular season, but the sectional team final would have a different ending as the Brothers won two points in both singles and doubles. Olivia Messineo got it started, sweeping Amitra Deol 6-2, 6-3, as Shilpa Kamani topped Elizabeth Lane 6-3, 6-1. Colleen Cavanaugh lost to Hillary Fenner 6-4, 6-1. As Taylor Procopio and Sarah Kitts beat Dani Alderman and Katharina Kulik 6-1, 6-3, Shannon Fitch and Rebecca Scullin lost in two sets, so it all rode on two doubles matches that went to the wire. Lauren Mastoreni and Laura Bulman had a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 defeat to Ryan Merle and Sidney Lawson. But by surviving a long third set, Julie Thomson-Basha and Emily Norkett got the clinching point, winning their showdown with Katherine Hill and Megan Holleran 6-2, 6-7 (7-3), 7-5. They only had five points on the line in the Class C final, where Manlius-Pebble Hill fended off Beaver River. Two points came easily in singles, where Anke Von Hanstein and Anna Purcell won by equal 6-1, 6-1 margins over, respectively, Amy Wormwood and Kristen Dziekan. Alex Verbeck lost to Kim Widrick 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). Both doubles matches were long battles. MPH’s Laura Flagg and Rebecca Kunz could not hold an early lead, falling to Kelly Wormwood and Olivia Cornell 5-7, 6-3, 7-5. However, Cara Adelson and Maya Stevens-Ulinsky made their own comeback, beating Andrea Peters and Abigail Cornell 5-7, 6-0, 6-4 to get the Trojans’ clinching point.
