Cazenovia’s girls tennis team elected to go into the Section III Class B tournament, its 5-5 record a direct result of the brutal competition it had faced within the OHSL Liberty division. Properly tested, the no. 10 seed Lakers went to the north country for last Wednesday’s opening round against no. 7 seed Carthage and survived the chill, beating the Comets 4-1. In doubles, Sarah Glass and Kelly Furlong beat Hannah Millich and Nicole Dawley 6-3, 6-2, while Laura Gregg and Hannah Koennecke needed a come-from-behind effort to top Koelle Percy and Kara Fahsel 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. The Lakers went 2-1 in singles, as Morgan Crawford routed Skylar Salisbury 6-1, 6-0 and Elizabeth Palmer earned a 6-1, 6-1 sweep over Ashley Sensibaugh. Lauren MacHose lost to Kailah Kempney 7-6 (7-1), 6-4. As it turned out, Cazenovia’s “reward” was a Class B quarterfinal Thursday against unbeaten no. 2 seed Skaneateles, who prevailed 7-0 in the battle of Laker teams. Palmer did go to three sets in her singles match with Elizabeth Lane, only to fall 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Crawford also played well in a 6-4, 7-5 loss to Hillary Fenner. Of the doubles matches, all won by Sknaeteles in straight sets, Renee Groetz and Morgan Cowherd had the closest call, nearly claiming the second set in a 6-1, 6-4 defeat to Dani Alderman and Katharina Kulik. Cazenovia, playing back-to-back matches, could not keep up with a talented — and well-rested — Skaneateles squad, who went on to face Jamesville-DeWitt in the Class B semifinal round. Cazenovia fell to 6-6.
