Westhill’s boys soccer team can now claim the first signature victory of first-year head coach Tom Etoll’s tenure. Shaking up the race for the OHSL Liberty division regular-season title all by itself, the Warriors went to Skaneateles on Friday afternoon and stunned the Lakers 1-0 by handling each phase of the game in a patient and mature manner. Skaneateles had won the previous meeting 4-1 on Sept. 15, helped in no small part by Kelly Donigan, who three times saw his powerful throw-ins from the side turn into goals. In colder, sloppier conditions for the rematch, Westhill’s defense made sure Donigan did not repeat that behavior, helped in no small part by a hot effort from goalkeeper, Ryan Boyle, whose 18 saves inspired his teammates to generate some kind of offense. Overall, the Lakers controlled the flow of play, but as long as the game was 0-0, it could turn — and it did in the 50th minute. Off a feed from Anthony Scaravillo, Andrew McBride flung a shot past Skaneateles goalie Jake Bird and into the net. Given a long time to hang on, Westhill did so, and not just because Bird was hot. Back-line players like Taylor Price, Dylan Tripodi and Jared Persons kept cool and protected Boyle down the stretch enough to make that slim margin hold up. Prior to this, Westhill turned to Aaron Hunt to supply a one-man show in the course of last Tuesday’s 4-1 win over Cazenovia at Fenner Street. Hunt had a hat trick by halftime, constantly finding his way open and firing the ball past Lakers goalkeeper Mason Powell. Not content with a 3-0 halftime margin, Hunt tacked on a fourth goal in the second half as Scaravillo and J.T. Alcaro got credit for assists. Westhill, now one game of Skaneateles and Marcellus in the league standings with a 6-2-1 mark (7-3-1 overall), get games against Manlius-Pebble Hill and Solvay.
