An ideal turn of events on Saturday gives the Chittenango football team a chance to share the Class B West division regular-season championship — and maybe even get a top playoff seed. The Bears had to take care of its trip to Phoenix — which it did, keeping the Firebirds winless with a solid all-around effort in a 28-6 victory. Later that night, Chittenango watched, with delight, as Vernon Verona Sherrill beat South Jefferson 34-21. That created a four-way tie atop the B East among the Bears, Red Devils, Spartans and Oneida, all with 2-1 league marks. And as it happens, those four teams will face each other this Friday — Chittenango hosting South Jefferson, Oneida hosting archrival VVS. The results will determine the seeding order for the start of next weekend’s Class B playoffs, with any of the teams capable of finishing in any of the four spots. Aside from those permutations, Chittenango first had to worry about Phoenix, just the right opponent to face in the wake of the Bears’ 16-13 home loss to Oneida eight days earlier. Chittenango got on the board first with Kyle Mills scoring on a one-yard run, only to have Phoenix answer with Josh Morse scoring from 26 yards out. Only Zach Drake’s successful extra point kept the Bears in front, 7-6, going into the second period. Gradually, Chittenango would take over, mostly due to quarterback Devin Christopher, who kept the Firebirds’ secondary off balance as he went 13-for-25 for 175 yards. Christopher’s first TD pass, seven yards to Brendan Galek, helped the Bears gain a 14-6 lead before halftime. In the third quarter, a nice mix of passes and runs set up Christopher for his second scoring pass to Galek, this one covering four yards. What’s more, the Bears’ defense clamped down on Phoenix following that first-quarter TD, and offered a final touch when Nic Bacon picked up a fumble and returned it 25 yards for the clinching score in the fourth quarter. If Chittenango can beat South Jefferson Friday and VVS knocks off Oneida, the Bears would win the tie-breaker over the Red Devils (because of that 30-19 win on Sept. 27) and get the top seed for the playoffs. Other scenarios have Chittenango in second, third or fourth place, creating all kinds of excitement and suspense for the final game of the regular season.
