It wasn’t so long ago – six weeks, to be precise – that the football game between Liverpool and Christian Brothers Academy scheduled for the Carrier Dome generated as much potential excitement as any contest in the 2009 regular season. But when the two sides finally did meet at the Dome Friday night, it offered a chilling reflection of how far apart they were. The Warriors were still as good as everyone expected, helped in no small part by the return of Cam Jones, as it shot past the Brothers 35-7 to improve its record to 5-1. CBA, meanwhile, fell to 3-3, and haven’t even qualified for the Section III Class AA playoffs. Since a 2-0 start, the Brothers have lost three of four games and still needs to beat Central Square Friday (or have Baldwinsville beat Rome Free Academy) just to get in. Liverpool was fired up by the return of Jones, who sat out the team’s 21-0 win over Central Square on Oct. 3 at the Dome after a concussion suffered in the team’s loss to Baldwinsville the week before. Fully healed, Jones was given a 7-0 lead before he even took the field. Tyland Thompson picked up the opening kickoff at his own 20-yard line and, picking up textbook blocks from his fellow Warriors, returned that kick 80 yards for a touchdown. Once Liverpool made a defensive stop, Jones got his chance, and didn’t waste it, moving the ball crisply to CBA’s 38-yard line before throwing deep – and finding Ethan VanMarter for the touchdown to make it 14-0. Briefly, the Brothers answered, moving to Liverpool’s seven-yard line before quarterback Tyler Hamblin went in to cut the margin to 14-7. But those would be CBA’s lone points of the night. And just before the quarter ended, Liverpool struck again, as Jones, from the Brothers’ 16, found Mike Donitzen on the wing, and the senior fullback drove home for the TD. Liverpool could not maintain that torrid pace the rest of the night, but did not have to, either. A fast, relentless defense took full advantage of CBA’s lethargy and pitched a shutout over the last three periods. In the third quarter, the Warriors’ margin grew to 28-7 as Donitzen scored again on a 14-yard run – but a troubling development left Warriors fans worried. Greg Bell, who had 77 yards on 16 carries, left the game in that period, due to a sprained right knee. He did not return, but with the Warriors in firm command, coaches determined that it was better not to risk any further injury to the team’s star tailback. Instead, Jones offered one more big play in the fourth quarter, connecting with VanMarter for the second time on the night, this one a 33-yard TD pass. Overall, Jones threw just eight times, but had five completions for 114 yards. Bell’s injury will be closely watched, of course, and Jones might have to throw a lot more this Friday when Liverpool clashes with archrival Cicero-North Syracuse at Bragman Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m. Fresh off shutting out Rome Free Academy 27-0, the Northstars, like the Warriors, are 3-1 in the Class AA-1 division, so the winner of this game will be assured of a home game for next weekend’s opening round of the AA playoffs. CBA, meanwhile, plays at Central Square, needing the win not just to get to the playoffs, but to regain the confidence that seemed to abandon them a month ago.
