Maybe it’s time to reconsider the East Syracuse-Minoa girls soccer team in the wake of its October surge. Without question, the high moment of the Spartans’ season to date came on Thursday night, when Allyson Rossi personally took two-time defending Section III Class A champion Cortland apart in a 4-1 victory over the Purple Tigers. Cortland arrived at Spartan Stadium with a 9-2 record, but was in a bad mood because, two nights earlier, archrival Homer had beaten them 2-1, breaking up a lengthy win streak. Perhaps sensing an opportunity, ESM turned to Rossi, who proceeded to personally punish the Purple Tigers’ defense. The Spartans grabbed a 2-0 lead by halftime and kept on charging as Rossi put together a three-goal hat trick, adding an assist on Haley Wodarczyk’s goal for good measure. Caitlyn Hennessey, Alex McEachron and Lauren Greiner all assisted on Rossi’s tallies. In response, all Cortland could manage was Taylor Reynolds’s second-half goal. Casie Aurrichio turned everything else away, though, finishing with eight saves in one of her best efforts of the season. Before all this, ESM moved back to the .500 mark (5-5-1) last Monday, going to Mexico and putting together a 4-0 shutout of the Tigers. Contrasting what would take place against Cortland, four different players –Rossi, Wodarczyk, Nicole DeVona and Tori Burns — put in the four ESM goals, with Olivia Chopskie adding an assist.
