As the temperatures dipped, the Vernon Verona Sherrill girls cross country team warmed up, sweeping last Tuesday’s three-way home meet against Whitesboro and Utica-Notre Dame. The girls Red Devils beat the Warriors 26-29 and roared past the Jugglers 19-43, led by Lauren MacDonald, who covered the VVS course in 20 minutes, 57 seconds, 20 seconds better than Whitesboro’s Katie Day. Casey Kane took fifth place (23:24) as the other Red Devils covered the top 10 to overtake Whitesboro. VVS, on the boys side, beat UND 15-43, but lost to Whitesboro 23-38. Seth MacDonald claimed second place in 18:42, just behind the Warriors’ Joe Schoen (18:36), while Nate Faherty earned third place in 19:28. Oneida’s cross country teams also ran at home on Tuesday. The boys team split, beating Camden 24-33, but losing to New Hartford 20-43. Conor McCarthy dominated the individual race for the Indians, winning in a time of 18:06, more than a minute clear of the field. The girls Indians lost to New Hartford 16-39 despite Sara Rifendifer’s time of 22:56.
