The Cicero-North Syracuse cross country team went east on Saturday and had a lot of success in the 67th E.J. Herrmann Invitational at Proctor Park in Utica. In fact, the CNS boys won Varsity Race no. 3, mostly reserved for the large schools, with 39 points to Saratoga Springs’ total of 54 points. Two other Section II foes, Colonie and Niskayuna, took the third and fourth spots. Chris Buchanan pulled away to win the individual race in 16 minutes, 42.2 seconds, more than 15 seconds ahead of Saratoga’s Sam Place. ‘ Though Saratoga had three of the top nine spots, CNS atoned by having five of the top 15, including Dan Fritz claiming fourth place in 17:36.8. Close behind, Jared Walther was eighth (17:43.4), while Alex Bottorff was 12th (18:08.8), just ahead of Ken Ryan (18:15.9) and Eric Hart (18:21.9), who were 14th and 15th, respectively. Rob Donadio (18:33.2) finished 20th. In the girls Varsity Race no. 3 at Utica, CNS finished second, with 78 points, as Saratoga (16 points) earned seven of the top eight spots. Only Nicole Watterud, who finished fifth (19:45.7), broke up the Saratoga monopoly at the top, with Marissa Colburn in 10th place (20:52.3). Dana Rinaldi (21:54.6) and Mackenzie Cummings (21:55.4) were 19th and 20th, respectively, as Katie Laris finished 24th (22:17.5) and Christina Sakowski (22:33.9) was 27th.
