Through two games, the Cazenovia field hockey team had not even allowed a goal, so it would be interesting to see how it would react when that streak ended. Quite well, as it turned out.
The Lakers, in fact, were behind Weedsport at halftime of Tuesday’s game at Burton Street Elementary School before taking over in the second half to register a 3-1 victory over the Warriors. Even though Cazenovia again controlled the flow of play from the opening face-off onward, it couldn’t put anything past Weedsport goalie Gabriella Barrigar, who dazzled with 16 saves by the time it was done. In a rare Warrior attack, Amy Sanchez, off a feed from Brittany LaForce, flung a shot past Cazenovia goalie Emily Mastapaolo into the box, and Weedsport had a 1-0 lead. So it remained until the second half, when all that Laker pressure and patience started to pay off. Belle Hoagland, Tori Widrick and Jillian Vogl each scored, with Widrick adding an assist and Kara Stadler also getting an assist. Continuing to test itself, Cazenovia on Friday begins play in the Camden Tournament.
