Two talented sisters ended up playing a central role in the Baldwinsville boys soccer team’s 1-0 victory over West Genesee Tuesday night at Wildcat Stadium in Camillus. On a night where the Bees controlled the flow of play, the game remained scoreless until Emma and Jackie Firenze both got opportunities late in regulation – and one would convert. B’ville and West Genesee have staged many memorable soccer battles in this decade – and many of the players on both teams also have dueled on the lacrosse field in recent years, adding to the night’s color. Still, from the time the game kicked off, the Bees were the aggressor, spending the majority of the first half in the Wildcats’ end, using its depth to unleash a variety of attacks. Several times, goalie Moriah Saidel had to make superb stops to keep the team 0-0. Only in rare instances did WG break that gridlock, but the Bees used offside traps to keep the Wildcats’ front line from getting too close to goalie Maggie Monnat. As the second half wore on, though, the Wildcats’ attacks started to grow, as the young lineup (one freshman and three sophomores among the starters) started to get some confidence. With its deeper roster, though, the Bees remained in control, just waiting for the proper moment to get in front. And two of them would take place. With 13:08 left in regulation, freshman Emma Firenze took the ball in the right corner, then turned and charged toward the net and was tripped just short of Saidel, causing a penalty kick. Somehow, Firenze missed the net to the right. Not even four minutes later – 9:14 to play in regulation – it was sophomore Jackie Firenze’s turn. From the left side, 20 yards out, Jackie ripped a hard shot that flew past Saidel and found the top right side of the net, the only goal that B’ville needed. Thanks to a couple of last-minute stops, the Bees moved to 2-1 on the season, and will host Utica Proctor on Friday, just as West Genesee plays at Auburn, a team it tied 2-2 on Sept. 10.
