Two seasons ago, the Fayetteville-Manlius field hockey team got a taste of success, getting all the way to the Section III Class A finals before falling to Liverpool. Following some setbacks in 2008, the Hornets might be ready to strike again, as shown by a big 2-1 win over Cicero-North Syracuse in last Tuesday’s season opener. Even with seven departed seniors from ’08, F-M was ready for the Northstars, getting a 1-0 edge at halftime, then matching goals when CNS got on the board in the second half. Katelyn Gualtieri and Molly Winiecki scored for F-M, both of them unassisted. Senior goalie Julia Magley’s eight saves helped keep the Hornets in front. F-M went for two in a row Thursday, at Watertown, and had one of the best offensive outputs in the program’s history, reaching double digits in a 10-0 destruction of the Cyclones. Overall, the Hornets took 41 shots, racing to a 7-0 lead by halftime. Amid the flurry, Gualtieri earned a three-goal hat trick, while Kelsey Clark gained two goals and one assist. Meg Helmer helped out with a goal and two assists, as Cara Esposito had one goal and one assist. Hannah Buckline, Kendra Napierala and Sara Simons contributed goals, with Molly Winiecki adding two assists. F-M was back home Monday to face Auburn before a Wednesday trip to Baldwinsville.
