Blessed with lots of sunshine, each of the area’s boys golf teams kicked off the 2009 season — and one side already has a tournament victory in its pocket. Fayetteville-Manlius beat nine other entries at Monday’s Henninger Invitational at Drumlins East, shooting 206 to beat Baldwinsville (212) by six shots. West Genesee (215) took third place. From an individual standpoint, a trio of Hornets — Scott Stegemann, Sean Wildhack and Kevin Ralph — each shot 40 for nine holes, one shot behind the individual champion, Cicero-North Syracuse’s Damian George. F-M then won its CNY Counties League opener on Thursday at Woodcrest, taking out Cicero-North Syracuse’s Green team 183-202. Ryan Fero led with a 35, with Tyler Ramie and Brendan Englert each shooting 36. Ralph and Stegemann also played well, shooting 38 apiece. As this was going on, Christian Brothers Academy also won its opener, 202-205, over Cortland at the Brothers’ home course at Pointe East. Josh Rathbun and Ethan Fuller each shot 37, tying Purple Tigers teammates Mike Congdon and Brian Hughes. East Syracuse-Minoa’s Blue Team went north, to Battle Island, and beat Fulton 209-231. Tyler Kiddle, with a 39, was the only player on either side to break 40, with Travis Oot and Tom Rosachi hitting that number 0n the mark. But ESM Orange dropped a 209-252 decision to Chittenango at Poolsbrook. Josh Somers led the Spartans with a 48, with Dan MacDougal and Bryan Reader each shooting 49. Ryan McGinnis paced the Bears, nearly matching par with a 36. Jamesville-DeWitt, the last team to get underway, did so Thursday at The Pines, routing Mexico 186-269. For the Red Rams, Jake Merola shined with a 34, part of a strong four-man effort. Mike Engstrom put up a 36, with Alex Fischer shooting 37 and Erik Davis adding a 38.
