Maybe no one was more ready than the Fayetteville-Manlius boys lacrosse team to get the Section III playoffs started. At the tail end of its regular season, the Hornets absorbed three consecutive one-goal defeats, this after building a double-digit win streak that propelled it into the state Class A top 10. All the trouble started May 12, when Cicero-North Syracuse came to F-M and stunned the Hornets in overtime 9-8. As it happened, the Northstars would arrive again on Saturday in the Section III Class A quarterfinal round. This F-M team would not let CNS beat them again, completely dominating the rematch on all fronts and bashing the Northstars 15-2. From a modest 2-0 lead, F-M really took charge in the second quarter, winning the face-offs, attacking at will and scoring with consistent regularity. It was 8-0 by halftime, and 10-0 before CNS got on the board in the third period. Justin DePalma and Matt Taylor each had five assists to anchor the show. Mike O’Neil scored three times, with DePalma, Ari Waffle, Ron Caputo and Todd Webster each getting two goals. Taylor, Jim Dittmar and Chris Walsh also scored, with Mike Poppleton and Brendan Englert adding assists. Meanwhile, Alex Cameron-Carter, Max Cooper, Jake Cooper and the rest of F-M’s back line took the Northstars out of its game, and Ethan Flack, starting in goal in place of Stefan Basile, recorded eight saves. On Wednesday, F-M, the no. 3 seed, would seek payback for a May 19 defeat to no. 2 seed Corcoran in the Class A semifinals at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium. The winner gets West Genesee or Liverpool in the Class A final Friday at 8 p.m., also at CNS.
