Whatever else could be said about Corcoran boys lacrosse stars James and Edmund Cathers, they sure have a good memory from things that went wrong. Applying that memory, the Cathers brothers led the no. 2 seed Cougars in an impressive offensive effort during last Saturday night’s Section III Class A quarterfinal, a 19-11 victory over the no. 7 seed Baldwinsville Bees. On that same turf eight days earlier, B’ville had come in and stunned Corcoran 11-10, a big letdown after a win over Fayetteville-Manlius earlier that week. Both James and Edmund Cathers struggled against a Bees’ defense geared to stop them. So they worked on some new moves — then showed up for the rematch with intent to punish B’ville at every turn. Corcoran set a swift pace, leading 6-2 after one period, and by halftime, the margin had grown to 11-3, more goals than had been scored in that first meeting. It was 16-6 before B’ville made a brief, futile comeback down the stretch. James Cathers would get 11 points by himself, backing up his four goals with seven assists. Often, those passes went to Edmund Cathers, who had a team-best six goals and added a pair of assists as both picked up the slack for Derrick Eccles, who had just one assist. Behind them, Pete Schneider had three goals and one assist, with Dalton Powless gaining two goals and two assists. Cree Cathers scored twice, adding an assist as Ethan Thompson and Nick Mahklouf earned single goals. Tim Hayden (four goals, two assists) and Billy Ward (two goals, five assists) led B’ville’s effort. On Wednesday night, Corcoran will get F-M again in the Class A semifinal at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium. The winner goes back to CNS Friday night to meet West Genesee or Liverpool for the sectional Class A title.
