From the oval to the field events, from sprints to distance events, the Canastota boys track and field team represented itself on all levels to earn the Section III Class B-2 championship. In the B-2 meet held last Friday at Marcellus High School, the Raiders earned 149 points, holding off Clinton (131 points) in a spirited duel for the top spot. Adirondack took third place with 98 points. As expected, Canastota’s distance runners earned lots of points. Robbie Argentine won three individual events, including the mile, where he posted a time of 4:30.91, and the 3,200-meter run, where he finished in 10:27.56, more than 11 seconds ahead of the field. Argentine also cleared 5 feet 10 inches to win the high jump by two inches and, for good measure, served as anchor on the Raiders’ 4×800 relay team as he helped Nick Darcangelo, Alex Spara and Jason Rice win in 8:31.91, beating Adirondack (8:35.10) by more than three seconds. Aaron Walker earned his victory in the 800-meter run, finishing in 2:01.44 as Spara took fourth place (2:06.93) and Darcangelo (2:08.23) finished fifth. In addition, Walker was third in both the mile (4:36.96) and 3,200 (10:41.16) behind Argentine, and he teamed with Darcangelo, Rice and Dan Sandford to take the 4×400 relay in 3:36.22, with Adirondack (3:38.04) again in second. Alex Lang had his big moment in the 400-meter hurdles, earning a victory in 59.33 seconds, as he was the lone B-2 competitor to break the one-minute mark. That helped Lang atone for a false start that cost him a chance to win the 110 high hurdles. Lang also was second in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet 8 1/4 inches and third in the triple jump, going 39 feet 10 1/4 inches, with Chris Barnhart (38 feet 3 3/4 inches) in fifth. Jeff Willis engaged in a great pole-vault duel with Adirondack’s Andre Adkins, but came out on top by clearing 13 feet 6 inches as Adkins (13 feet) was second. Also, Willis helped the Raiders’ 4×100 relay team finish fifth in 47.47 seconds. Sandford pulled away down the stretch to win the 400-meter dash, his time of 53.67 seconds well clear of Adirondack’s Josh Phillip (54.90 seconds) as Sandford also took sixth in the 200-meter dash. Derek Arner worked his way to second in the pentathlon, earning 2,262 points as Josh Hardy (Adirondack) won with 2,583 points. Josh Lavoie got fourth (40 feet 3/4 inch) in the shot put. Rice was fifth in the 400 and Ray Smith fifth in the 100-meter dash. As the hosts for the Section III Class B-2 girls meet, Canastota earned 54 points and took fifth place in a nine-team field. Christian Brothers Academy (174 points) finished on top. Once again, Allison Lasnicki dominated the distance races. She won a scintillating 1,500-meter duel with CBA’s Katie Brislin, 4:51.4 to 4:52.6, then pulled away from the 3,000-meter field in a time of 10:51.2 as teammate Marissa Williams (12:08.0) finished fourth. Lasnicki teamed with Florentina Gelbman, Carolyn Bradford and Francesca Popple to finish second in the 4×800 relay in 10:22.13, with CBA (10:11.8) prevailing. That same quartet, except for Katie Rinaldo replacing Gelbman, was fourth (4:45.4) in the 4×400 relay. Popple, on her own, was fifth in the 800 (2:32.7), as Rinaldo got sixth in the 400-meter dash. Sarah Foran was fourth in the pole vault, clearing 7 feet 6 inches, and fifth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 9:25.9. Denae Rinaldo tossed the shot put 27 feet 9 1/2 inches, taking third place, and was fifth (65 feet 4 inches) in the discus.
