To say the Skaneateles girls track and field team won last Thursday’s Section III Class B-1 championship meet at Canastota High School would be underscoring the point. More accurately, the Lakers pummeled the field, winning in every conceivable manner as it piled up 182 points, nearly double that of runner-up Cazenovia, who had 96.5 points. South Jefferson (71 points) was far back in third place. Rachel Hosie set the tone with her distance running. She held off Holland Patent’s Leah Rice in a thrilling 3,000-meter run, 10:47 flat to 10:47.9, then turned around to win the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:51.5, 1.2 seconds ahead of Homer’s Bori Tozser. Victoria Sakal tore her way to victories in both the 100-meter dash (13.0 seconds) and 200-meter dash, where she won in 26.9 seconds. Cassie Berg was third in the 200 (27.6 seconds) and fourth in the 100 (13.4 seconds), where Carley Baulick was sixth. Sakal and Berg helped the Lakers win the 4×100 relay in 52.2 seconds. In fact, Skaneateles swept the relays. Eileen Ford, Carly Strods, Grace VanderVen and Beatrice Walton took the 4×400 (4:19.1), with Walton returning to help Christie Barnett, Kelsey Eshleman and Amanda Gray take the 4×800 in 10:03.1. Pulling off a 1-2-3 sweep of the 400-meter dash, Ford won in 1:01.6, just edging out Gray and Barnett, both of whom finished in 1:01.8. Barnett earned her title in the 400-meter hurdles, posting a time of 1:07.2 as Homer’s Maureen DeAngelis (1:08.5) led the chasing pack. In the 800, VanderVen was third (2:29.1) and Strods (2:31.9) took fifth, with VanderVen also fourth in the long jump. Skaneateles also won a trio of field events. Gabby Eckles cleared 4 feet 10 inches in the high jump, while Madison Eckles taking the pole vault as she cleared 9 feet 6 inches. Ford added a title in the triple jump, going 32 feet as, incredibly, Cazenovia’s Paige Biviano finished second in each of the events where the Laker trio finished on top. Caroline Walton threw the discus 93 feet 6 inches, taking second place as she added a third (31 feet 4 inches) in the shot put, where Cheryl Dean finished fifth.
