In one of the closest-ever Section III girls track and field championship results, Fayetteville-Manlius came within 1.5 points of reaching the top Thursday in the Class AA meet at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium. Even with smashing efforts on the oval, the Hornets, with 105 points, had to watch as the hosts from CNS used a wide range of high finishes to post 106.5 points and pull out the title. Liverpool (93 points) and Utica Proctor (83 points) were close behind. Molly Malone may have provided the single most memorable performance of the meet, though. In the 800-meter run, Malone finished in a time of 2:09.11, breaking, by nearly two seconds, the Section III record of 2:11.2 Laura Kinney (Tully) set way back in 1980. Courtney Chapman won twice, posting 4:45.23 in the 1,500-meter run as Malone (4:49.58) finished second. In the 3,000-meter run, Chapman tore to victory in 9:48.96, more than half a minute ahead of the field as Meaghan Anklin (10:37.82) took fourth. Mackenzie Carter was third in the 800 (2:20.10) behind Malone. Carter, Malone, Kristen Buchan and Kathryn Fanning worked together to take the 4×800 relay in 9:38.80. Jess Marini was part of three different wins. On her own, Marini beat teammate Heather Martin in the 400-meter dash, 58.21 seconds to 59.45, and she tore to victory in the 400-meter hurdles in a season-best 1:02.97 as Audrey Wallace (1:08.73) finished fifth. And in the 4×400 relay, Marini and Martin joined Natalie Alibrandi and Molly Levy as F-M won in a time of 4:03.36, nearly four seconds ahead of Liverpool (4:07.29). Martin also took fifth in the long jump, going 15 feet 11 1/2 inches as Alibrandi finished fourth in the 400 (1:00.35) and Heather Rogeux got sixth in the pentathlon.
