For a longer run in the Section III Class AA playoffs, the Baldwinsville baseball team will need to upend the top seed — who just happened to be its neighbors from Liverpool. And while the Bees could not get past the Warriors, taking a 4-2 defeat, its playoff say proved to be an exciting one. To set up the showdown, the Bees first had to get past no. 9 seed Oswego in Tuesday’s opening round. It turned into a back-and-forth drama that lasted eight innings before B’ville beat the Buccaneers 4-3. Mike St. John got the start, and worked well for five innings, only allowing single runs in the second and fifth innings. However, that was enough for Oswego to go out in front, 2-0. Finally, B’ville got to Bucs pitcher Gary Carpentier for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to seize a 3-2 lead. Brett Earle and Bo Watson both got credit for RBIs during this rally, as an Oswego throwing error helped in the comeback. Watson also replaced St. John on the mound after Oswego tied it, 3-3, in the top of the sixth. Through the seventh and eighth innings, Watson kept the Bucs off the board. This led to the bottom of the eighth, where Dan Dubiel got a single to lead off the inning. Dubiel stole second and, with one out, John Harper singled. Despite a good throw home, Dubiel slid, head-first, and scored to win the game. B’ville now confronted Liverpool, the top seed in the AA bracket, and had a chance to win all the way to the end before accepting a 4-2 loss to the Warriors. Up against Liverpool ace Pat Brown, B’ville landed runs in both the first and second innings to seize a 2-0 lead. John Feola earned an RBI, while Earle and Kevin Roy scored the team’s runs. Taking his turn on the mound, Earle watched as Liverpool tied it in the second inning, then used two runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull out in front. B’ville lost even though Earle and Jeff Schuster gave up just four combined hits.
