All but assured of the top seed in the Section III Class A playoffs, the West Genesee boys lacrosse team just had to make sure that its focus did not completely drift toward the more important games ahead. Yet the Wildcats struggled early in last Tuesday’s game at Baldwinsville before a second-half rush produced a comfortable 14-5 win over the Bees. In many ways, WG’s first half at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium mirrored what had gone on May 14 against Fayetteville-Manlius, when a six-goal lead vanished in the second half before the Wildcats regrouped and edged the Hornets 9-8. It took quite a while for WG to get rid of the turnovers and mental mistakes that plagued them late against F-M. This allowed B’ville to hang close, and as they went to halftime, the Wildcats only led 5-3. Something started to click in the third quarter, though, as the offense more than doubled its production in a 6-2 spurt. Just to be sure, WG blanked the Bees in the final period. Matt McCabe, with four goals and one assist, set the pace, as Ike Hopper and Tyler Brown each had two goals and two assists. Jordan Rogers and John Glesener also had two-goal outings, as Jim Marks and P.J. Hart earned single tallies. Rogers, Marks and Conor Regin earned assists. Meanwhile, B’ville couldn’t get much going, especially in the second half, against a Wildcat defense that honed in on Billy Ward, holding him to one goal, and had Steve Mahle earn 15 saves. WG has its Senior Night festivities on Friday when it hosts Cicero-North Syracuse at 7:30.
