By taking two of five divisions, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys tennis team got rewarded with the Section III Class A championship last Tuesday at Syracuse University’s SkyTop Courts. The Hornets earned 56 points, enough to fend off Baldwinsville, who took second place with 42 points. Fulton was third with 32 points. Undefeated this year, F-M’s first doubles team of Vivek and Vikram Nayer kept it up by going to the finals and beat East Syracuse-Minoa’s tandem of Parker Stone and Daryll Johnson in a 6-2, 6-3 sweep. Also, Nick Westergaard prevailed in second singles, working his way to the title match before beating Fulton’s Jake West in a 6-1, 6-1 rout. Matt Izant put his unbeaten mark on the line in the first singles final against another unbeaten player, Corcoran’s Chirs LaPort. As it turned out, LaPort won 6-4, 6-2, and the doubles team of Dan Jee and Michael Kaplan met the same fate in second doubles, falling to Grady Schmidt and Alessandro Nieves (B’ville) 7-5, 6-0. Jamesville-DeWitt finished fifth in the Class B Tournament at Utica Parkway Courts, earning 24 points as CBA (45 points) edged Skaneateles (41 points) for the top spot. Cooper White and Gorav Simlote finished third in the second doubles division, while Jake Weisenthal took that same spot in first singles.
