Chittenango’s track and field teams got to serve as hosts for last Tuesday’s annual Onondaga High School League Freedom division championships. The Bears would contend on the girls side, earning 103 points for third place, just behind runner-up Phoenix (106 points) as Jamesville-DeWitt won with 203 points. Katrina Karbowniczak notched Chittenango’s lone victory, in the pentathlon, where she picked up 1,799 points to finish comfortably ahead of J-D’s Danielle Doss (1,604 points) as Ashley Slater finished fifth. Otherwise, the Bears had a lot of runner-up efforts, two of them from Courtney Dyer. In the 100-meter dash, Dyer (13.14 seconds) was just behind J-D’s Marae Tearney (13.09 seconds), while she also got second in the 200-meter dash in 27.35 seconds. Chittenango’s boys team ended up with 46 points, in sixth place, well off the battle at the top as J-D (151 points) beat out Fulton (135 points) to win here, too. Josiah Durfee put the Bears in the win column in the 3,200-meter run, covering the two miles in 10:10.77 to beat Fulton’s Kyle Martin by 3.54 seconds. Bruce Gondeck got third in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 16.60 seconds, plus a fourth in the high jump (5 feet 10 inches) and sixth in both the triple jump and 400 hurdles.
