Idle since the autumn, the Christian Brothers Academy boys golf team ended its seven-month hiatus with a winning effort during last Monday’s Section III Class C-1 tournament at Barker Brooks Golf Club in Oriskany Falls. The Brothers shot a team score of 429, just ahead of Thousand Islands, who finished second in 435. Sauquoit Valley (455) took third place. Mike Kitts, in particular, had a memorable day. The CBA senior shot an 83, tying for third place among individuals to advance to the state qualifier, then sped back home for a baseball game against Phoenix — where he pitched 5 1/3 innings and got the win. In all, four CBA players made it to the state qualifier. Mark Finlay shot 84, one shot behind Kitts, while Josh Rathbun put together an 85 and Aidan Fuller shot an 86. Elsewhere, East Syracuse-Minoa’s Blue team shot 423, ahead of Fayetteville-Manlius (427), as they took third and fourth, respectively, in the Class A-2 tournament at Rogues Roost. Whitesboro won, with a 420, beating Auburn by a single shot. Tyler Dattmore led the Spartans and tied Watertown’s Mike Bufalini for top individual honors, each shooting 78. Tyler Kiddie shot an 83 and Ben Loder added an 84 on ESM’s behalf. F-M saw Sean Wildhack shoot an 82, with Tyler Kingsley and Scott Stegemann tying at85. Jamesville-DeWitt gained third place in Class B-1 with a 443 at Radisson Greens, where New Hartford (404) beat runner-up Cortland by 33 strokes. Jake Merola and Erik Davis each shot rounds of 84, with Alex Fischer contributing an 85. Bishop Grimes, fifth in the Class C-2 Tournament at Barker Brook with a score of 485, saw Killian Hartough shoot an 82 to finish third among individuals. All of these golfers advanced to Thursday’s state qualifier, played again at Colgate University’s Seven Oaks course in Hamilton.
