Forced to go on the road all the time because its own facility is closed, the Liverpool girls track and field team has coped quite well — and now, it’s a league champion. Best of all, the Warriors pulled this off at the expense of its greatest rival, Cicero-North Syracuse, putting an end to the Northstars’ eight-year, 44-meet win streak in a convincing 82-59 decision last Wednesday afternoon at Bragman Stadium. Wanetta Rodney and Trina Bills served as the anchors for the Warriors’ winning effort, as they had a part in six different wins. In the 100-meter dash, Rodney prevailed in 13.0 seconds, after which she beat the field in the 200-meter dash with a clocking of 27.6 seconds. Rodney, Nachez Brown, Chrissy Scalisi and Armani Moore teamed to win the 4×100 relay in 50.5 seconds. Bills showed her talent and versatility by winning three individual titles. She ran the 400-meter dash in 1:00.6, claimed the 400-meter hurdles in 1:08.2 and went on to earn a third win in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:22.4. Amid four different wins by CNS’s Jasmine Thompson (100 hurdles, long jump, triple jump, high jump), Harmony Cross won the shot put, tossing it 33 feet 7 inches. Erika Salem cleared 8 feet 6 inches to take the pole vault. Liverpool ended up taking two of the three relays. Cara Scalisi, Skye Borasky, Ashelee Spears and Connie Torres teamed up to take the 4×400 in 4:14.1. This helped ease the pain of Thursday’s boys meet, which CNS dominated as it beat the Warriors 109-32. Shut out in field events, Liverpool found some solace on the oval. Colin Savage won the mile in 4:34.34 as Alex Wilke (4:37.99) finished third, while Zavon Watkins took the 800-meter run in 2:05.3. Corey Bundrage took the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.96 seconds. Otherwise, CNS piled up sweeps in many events and won some head-to-head battles. This included the 3,200-meter run, where Anthony Brais was second (10:09.59) to Chris Buchanan (10:07.82). Also, in the 4×400 relay, Watkins, Savage, Alex Wilke and Chris Clemons finished second in 3:35.0 as CNS (3:34.31) edged them out. As a follow-up to its triumph over CNS, Liverpool’s girls went to Friday’s Tully Invitational and found some more success. Rodney, Moore, Cara Scalisi and Connie Torres worked together to take the 4×100 relay in 50.55 seconds, edging out Rome Free Academy (50.84 seconds). This avenged the 100-meter dash, where Rodney finished second (12.92 seconds) to RFA’s Jessica Razy (12.58 seconds). Brown emerged with a win in the 100-meter high hurdles in 16.39 seconds, while Bills beat the field in the 800, winning in 2:19.79. In the distance medley relay, Bills, Brigid Heenan, Miranda McConnell and Rachel Putman earned yet another win in 12:41.51. Cross competed in the pentathlon, earning second with 2,133.5 points, just behind Thompson, who won with 2,247.5 points. Meagan Turner cleared 5 feet for second in the high jump as Cara Scalisi went 33 feet 1 3/4 inches for second in the triple jump. Chrissy Scalisi got to third in the 400 in 1:03.60 as Heenan ran to fourth (4:57.70) at 1,500 meters and Moore took third in the long jump. Erika Salem (8 feet 6 inches) and Chelsea Attaway (8 feet) were second and fourth, respectively, in the pole vault. Laura Zacketa was third in the discus (89 feet 10 inches) and Tatiana Gladney got fourth in the shot put (30 feet 10 1/2 inches).
