Just 10 days after getting beat on its home field, the Christian Brothers Academy baseball team turned it around on East Syracuse-Minoa, going on the road last Monday to beat the Spartans 7-4. ESM made the first big move, getting all of its runs off Brothers pitching ace Mike Kitts in the bottom of the first inning. Nick Eisenbeck, Billy Sullivan, Peter Gigliotti and Joe Greco each had one RBI. CBA tied it, though, in the top of the second, then used single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to go in front as Kitts blanked the Spartans the rest of the way. Kitts also starred at the plate, hitting the game’s only home run and earning three RBIs. Steve LaBerge drove in two runs as Dave Anderson and Chris Folsom both had a double and RBI. ESM pitcher Bobby Worden took the loss. While this proved fun, the Brothers’ next outing against Chittenango turned into an 11-inning marathon where Sean McGraw’s power finally led CBA past the Bears 10-8. Once ahead 5-0, the Brothers saw Chittenango score four runs in the third inning and two runs in the top of the fifth to pull in front, 6-5. CBA needed a run in the bottom of the seventh to avoid an upset. They went to extra innings, and after the Bears scored twice in the top of the ninth, CBA answered with two runs to keep it going. Finally, in the bottom of the 11th, McGraw, who had already homered, came up with a runner on base and powered Steve Mesmer’s pitch over the fence to win it. Aside from McGraw’s three RBIs, Anderson, LaBerge and Brian Moore each drove in two runs, with Anthony Cirillo and Pete Corasaniti earning one RBI apiece. Steve Mesmer earned the win in relief after Rob Cuomo started and Andy Scanlon saw a long relief stint. While all this was going on, ESM served up its own bit of excitement as a seventh-inning home rally pushed the Spartans past Fulton 7-6. ESM was down to the Red Raiders 5-0 — but in the bottom of the third, it scored four times to get back in the game. Still, it trailed 6-4 when, in the last of the seventh, it pushed across three runs against Fulton pitcher Marshall Cooper to win it. Lansing and Eisenbeck each had a double and two RBIs, with Jake Curtis and Neil Delaney also driving in runs. Curtis also got the win in relief of Lansing.
