A combination of well-timed hits and pitching poise from Vince Valentino pushed the Warriors past West Genesee 6-3 on a chilly Tuesday afternoon. Even though WG struck to take a 1-0 lead, it was Andrew Schreyer who, from his cleanup spot, would take charge in the early going. In the bottom of the first inning, Mike Weakley singled off Wildcats pitcher Eric Spencer with two out. Up stepped Schreyack, who bashed a Spencer fastball over the right-field fence, putting Liverpool up 2-1. Two innings later, in the bottom of the third, Liverpool had runners on second and third. Schreyack returned and, again with two outs, came through as his single down the right-field line led to two runs and a 4-1 lead. WG nearly caught up in the top of the fourth. Eric Bishop singled, and Spencer doubled him home, then took third on a bad throw. Brian Burns then stepped up and ripped a ball down the right-field line. But as Spencer scored to make it 4-3, Burns slowed up, thinking the ball was foul. Then he ran at full speed, but was tagged out at second. Instead of the tying run in scoring position with nobody out, Liverpool had an out — and Valentino escaped the jam, plus one where the tying run was on third in the fifth inning. As Valentino retired the last nine hitters he faced, WG sought to avoid damage when, with two out in the bottom of the fifth and Dom Cerniglia on second, Spencer intentionally walked Schreyack with first base open. It seemed like a sound move, given what Schreyack had done earlier. But Shawn Peake promptly doubled, scoring the Warriors’ pair of insurance runs.
