Christian Brothers Academy’s softball team made a breakthrough in last Monday’s game against Jamesville-DeWitt, pushing its way to a 6-4 victory over the Red Rams to kick off a perfect week. J-D scored first, but the Brothers answered with three runs off Jenny Keeler in the bottom of the first inning. The Red Rams closed within 3-2 and 4-3, only to have CBA keep answering. Jordan Sheridan pitched and got the win. Alexis Mento was the only player on either side to have two RBIs. Maggie Fennell tripled and drove in a run as Sheridan and Kelly Bewley earned one RBI apiece. J-D, in defeat, had Mary Young, Rachel Honis and Kathryn Votra each drive in a run. The Brothers then made it back-to-back wins by knocking off another big-name foe on Wednesday afternoon, taming Fulton 4-2. Sheridan only allowed a pair of fourth-inning runs, which gave the Red Raiders a 2-1 lead. That didn’t last, though, as CBA got to Fulton ace Jessica Palmitesso for three runs in the top of the fifth to go ahead for good. Fennell, Molly O’Brien and Courtney Henderson each got one RBI to help the cause. Staying hot, CBA made it three wins in four days when, with a late rally, it fought past the Cortland Purple Tigers 5-4. Down 2-1, the Brothers went in front by scoring three times in the third inning, the big blow being Colleen Tormey’s double that cleared the bases Cortland pushed back, using single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie it, 4-4, but a run in the bottom of the seventh allowed CBA to prevail. Tormey finished with three RBIs as O’Brien also drove in a run. Claire Gollegly also doubled. As a cap to this great week of work, the Brothers again used a combination of Sheridan’s pitching with some timely hits to knock off East Syracuse-Minoa 5-0 on Friday afternoon. For five innings, Sheridan and ESM ace Mallory Martino dueled, neither side allowing a run. Finally, in the bottom of the sixth, CBA used a series of hits to pull out in front, getting all five of its runs. In all, CBA had 10 hits, while ESM got just two hits off Sheridan. O’Brien, Tormey, Marissa Mosley and Kaitlin McIntyre each got credit for an RBI in that pivotal sixth inning as the Brothers improved to 6-2 on the season.
