A single outburst of offense proved to be the difference for the Marcellus softball team during last Monday afternoon’s 4-0 victory over Solvay. As expected, the two pitchers — Gina Cardarelli for the Mustangs, Gabrielle Nurod for the Bearcats — dueled for four innings at Marcellus Park, neither side able to score. Finally, Marcellus broke the 0-0 deadlock when, in the bottom of the fifth, it tagged Nurod for all four of its runs. Emily Hunt singled and produced two RBIs, while Cardarelli doubled home another run and Emily Lyssa Filtch’s triple led to another RBI. That proved enough for Cardarelli, as she gave up just four Solvay hits, all singles, in her complete-game effort. In another test on Wednesday afternoon, the Mustangs visited early OHSL Liberty leader Cazenovia, but did not find as much success as it lost to the Lakers 8-4. Marcellus had a 1-0 lead when, in the bottom of the second inning, Cardarelli struggled. Every Cazenovia hitter came to the plate and, before things could settle down, the Lakers had eight runs on the board. Down 8-1, the Mustangs did get three runs in the top of the third, but Lakers relief pitcher Alyssa Boswell would shut Marcellus out the rest of the way. In defeat, Marissa Bankey got credit for two RBIs as Hunt also drove in a run.
