With a strong week of work, the Marcellus boys lacrosse team moved back above the .500 mark, and hoped to stay there. Fresh off its overtime win over CBA on April 25, the Mustangs came back to action two days later and, on home turf, handled Onondaga 14-5. The Mustangs’ defense, led by C.J. Nye, nearly blanked the Tigers in the first three periods, giving Marcellus all kinds of time to steadily build a 9-1 lead. Matt McCaffer, with six goals and one assist, accounted for nearly half the Mustangs’ offense. Will Nolan had two goals and two assists while Tom Glose had two goals and one assist. R.J. Linder, Evan Hughes and Tim McNaney also scored, with Luke McNaney, Ken Kimpel and Josh Ginestro earning assists. In Thursday’s game against Tully, the Mustangs’ up-and-down fortunes slid down once more as it took a 13-8 loss to the Black Knights. Tully outscored Marcellus in every single period, showing more energy and drive as Zach Guy, with five goals and two assists, led the visitors along. By contrast, no single player on the Mustangs’ side could hit a similar hot streak. McCaffer, Linder and Kasey Mosher each had two goals, with McCaffer adding two assists. Nolan and Ginestro got single tallies, with McNaney and Nye adding assists. In the net, Roger Trombley recorded 18 saves. At least the week ended on a better note, thanks to Saturday’s 17-4 win over Manlius-Pebble Hill. In the first quarter, Marcellus outscored the Trojans 7-0, and stayed in full control the rest of the way. Again, McCaffer set the pace, with five goals and one assist. Nolan scored three times, adding an assist, while Ginestro gained two goals and two assists. Mosher also had two goals. Will Fiacchi, who joined the team in mid-April, had a goal and two assists as Glose and Joe Garrant also scored. McNaney added two assists. This put the Mustangs back at the .500 mark (6-6, to be exact), but it must visit both of the Class C favorites, LaFayette and Skaneateles, in a span of 48 hours this week.
