Continuing what has become a mid-season roll, the Cicero-North Syracuse baseball team enjoyed last Tuesday’s visit to DeLutis Field, piling up runs in a 15-8 victory over Rome Free Academy where Matt West and Kevan Smith took over. With the wind blowing out, the Northstars unleashed lost of power — and had to, since both sides got off to hot starts and it stood 6-6 after two innings. CNS went ahead for good with four runs in the top of the fourth, then watched RFA inch back within sight, 10-8, before a five-run seventh inning put things away. West twice went deep for home runs and set a new career mark with seven RBIs, while Smith also homered and got three RBIs as part of a 17-hit attack. Rob Quinn, Aaron Hildreth and Steve Salamone also drove in runs. Forced to go to its bullpen early as Rob Renaud departed, CNS watched T.J. Jaquay pick up the win and Mark Rinella close things out. Three days later, CNS resumed play against Corcoran and, in a high-scoring battle, outscored the Cougars 13-10. As with the RFA game, the game featured a tailwind. Through two innings, the Northstars led 6-0, but Corcoran, led by Steve Boronczyk’s pair of home runs and four RBIs, gained an 8-6 lead by the top of the fifth. Unfazed by this, CNS answered with five runs in the bottom of the sixth, pulling ahead for good as Jaquay would again pitch well (in relief of Austin Hyde and Salamone) to preserve that edge. Smith, for the second game in a row, pounded out two home runs, finishing with five RBIs. Salamone and West also went deep, with Salamone driving in three runs and John Howell adding a pair of RBIs. Against Henninger on Saturday, CNS would have to make do without any long balls, instead relying on the arm of Grant Nadeau to beat the Black Knights 5-0. Though Nadeau gave up seven hits, he kept Henninger off the board. CNS stayed patient against Black Knights pitcher James Bardenett until (again) the fifth inning, when it put up four runs. Both Quinn and Riley Moonan earned two RBIs. With these wins, CNS improved its record to 7-4 (5-1 league), as it looked forward to Friday’s showdown with archrival Liverpool that follows a Tuesday trip to Central Square.
