Through a series of three tests in four days, the Cazenovia girls lacrosse team will have a fairly good idea about its own strength before the calendar turned to May. Right in the middle, the Lakers hosted Carthage Tuesday at the Fenner Street complex and survived a wild shoot-out to beat the Comets 18-15. Rain and cold winds accompanied Carthage as it traveled from the north country, but Cazenovia proved to be neither warm nor accommodating. Blazing right through an uneven Comets defense, Cazenovia did enough to accumulate an 11-6 lead by halftime. Though it cooled off a bit in the second half, it still scored plenty and fought off Carthage as it tried to come back. It helped, no doubt, that Kara Cannizzaro and Gabby Jaquith both were in top form, each of them putting home six goals, with Cannizzaro adding five assists to give her a season-best total of 11 points. When the Comets tried to contain Cannizzaro or Jaquith, Kendra Volz got open, and she finished with four goals. Julie Gregg and Kaitlyn Button also scored, with Colleen Dougherty and Lindsay Nourse joining Gregg in the assist column. For Carthage, Kailah Kempney had five goals and two assists and Katie Ferris added four goals. Two days later, the Lakers hosted Christian Brothers Academy, who in the previous week had suffered one-goal losses to both Westhill and Marcellus, then had beaten Jordan-Elbridge in overtime the day before coming to Fenner. They didn’t have any last-second excitement here, though — and the Lakers liked that, jumping all over the Brothers to win 17-9. All through the first half, Cazenovia did whatever it wanted to do on the offensive side, scoring at a pace of close to a goal every two minutes on its way to a 12-4 lead. The rest of the game was spent nursing that big margin. Both Cannizzaro and Jaquith finished with five goals and two assists. Button scored twice as Volz and Kassie Kleine matched each other with one goal and one assist. Gregg, Dougherty and Sarah Race scored, too. In addition, Cazenovia’s did a solid job keeping CBA star Katie Webster (three goals) from getting on a roll. To start this crowded stretch, the Lakers went to Bishop Ludden last Monday and had full control throughout a 17-6 victory over the Gaelic Knights. Not leaning on any single player, Cazenovia worked its way to a 9-2 halftime edge and proved effective as it stayed unbeaten (3-0) within the OHSL Liberty American division. Four different players — Kara Cannizzaro, Gabby Jaquith, Julie Gregg and Kassie Kleine — earned three-goal hat tricks. Katie Kleine, Kendra Volz, Lauren Machoose, Kaitlyn Button and Colleen Dougherty also scored, with Hilary Bullock joining Volz and Jaquith in earning assists. After going to Onondaga on Monday, the Lakers (7-2) will host defending Class C champion Skaneateles on Wednesday, a team it beat earlier this season, before a Saturday battle with East Syracuse-Minoa.
