Moving into May, the Canastota softball team showed no signs of cooling off, regardless of the opponents it faced. Up against Sauquoit Valley Monday afternoon, the Raiders were in a tight contest most of the way until a big seventh inning produced a 7-1 victory over the Indians. A pair of third-inning runs pushed Canastota ahead 2-0, but Sauquoit scored in the bottom of the third and kept the game at 2-1 for a while, neither side budging. However, in the top of the seventh, the Raiders finally got the clutch hits it needed and earned five runs to end the drama and back up Liz McGinley’s four-hit pitching. Alicia Hibbard supplied the biggest bat with a home run, double and two RBIs. Alexis Havens also drove in a run. A day later, in temperatures 30-plus degrees cooler than the day before, Canastota repeated its behavior and beat Sherburne-Earlville by that same 7-1 margin. Lyndsay McGinley took her turn on the mound and gave up just three hits. After the Marauders scored in the top of the first inning, the Raiders got two runs in the bottom of that frame, then kept working until a three-run sixth inning sealed it. Canastota finished with 13 hits, despite the wet and chilly conditions. Hibbard drilled a home run, as she, along with Liz McGinley and Jessica Patterelli, each finished with two RBIs.
