Liverpool’s boys tennis team claimed a big prize on Saturday when it won the CNY Counties League National division tournament. In a nail-biter against Baldwinsville, the Warriors finished with 91 points, just enough to hold off the Bees, who had 89 points. To win, Liverpool had to dominate doubles, taking three of four divisions (all in three-set rallies) and reaching all four title matches Ian Swenson and Kelly Pare began the run, rallying from one set down to beat B’ville’s tandem of William Schmidt and Alessandro Nieves 4-6, 7-5, 6-0. In another three-set duel, Joe Corcoran and Eammon Vaughn beat Anthony Mann and Andrew Yankay (Cicero-North Syracuse) 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Victor Beaumont and Chris Brais managed their own comeback against Kevin Pregent and Zach Wolgemuth (B’ville), pulling out a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory. Three other times, the Warriors reached finals. Ryan DeANgelis and Anthony Mann ran into B’ville’s Tom Hamm and Dan Kot in a 6-2, 6-0 loss. Brandon Fernandes, in third singles, lost a long battle to CNS’s Kevin Tubolino 7-5, 6-7 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6) as Brennan Kirsche took a 6-4, 6-4 loss to the Bees’ Ben Weiss. This came after early-week weather trouble and a rare 11-point match on Thursday against Cortland where the Warriors blanked the Purple Tigers 11-0. DeAngelis, Kirsche, Fernandes, Dan Salem and Mike Schneider all played singles, and each of them won. Of the six doubles matches, two proved close. Vaughn and Paul Taber beat Kyle Tomlin and Tanner Jones 6-4, 7-5, with Schneider and Nick O’Hara getting past Sean Steve and Josh Barber 7-5, 6-1. During Friday’s 6-1 win over Nottingham, the Warriors had Schneider, Kirsche and Fernandes sweep the singles contests. Alex Lawson and Andrew Nguyen rallied in doubles to beat Ben Reeder and Alec Rich 4-6, 6-0, 6-3. D.J. Pace and Harron Sheikh lost a 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 7-6 (9-7) match to Corry Newton and Gregg White.
