Buoyed by that 10th-inning comeback to beat Oswego on April 18, the Cicero-North Syracuse softball team wanted some smoother outcomes — but would not always find them. For example, the Northstars got involved in another one-run decision on Friday against Baldwinsville at Gillette Field, hanging on to beat the Bees 6-5. Partially due Katie Ducharme’s home run and three RBIs, B’ville seized a 4-2 lead in the third inning as Sarah Salamone replaced Erica Gigliotti on the mound. Quickly, CNS tied it, 4-4, then scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to go in front for good. Salamone only allowed a sixth-inning run, but got the final outs, plus flawless defense as the Northstars did not commit an error, in contrast to B’ville’s three. Lucia Meola and Jennifer Huff both doubled, with Salamone and Morgan Nandin earning one RBI apiece. Right after the B’ville drama, the Northstars went east on Saturday to Utica Proctor and put together a 5-3 win over the Raiders. Again, some late offense was required. CNS led 3-0 after two innings, but Proctor tied it with a third-inning outburst which, again, forced Gigliotti to be pulled. Sydney O’Hara took over this time and blanked Proctor the rest of the way, as CNS used two runs off Raider pitcher Kayla Brennan in the top of the sixth. Sarah Wazenkiewitz had two RBIs as Meola and Brittany Paul each drove in one run. When the Northstars went to Auburn last Tuesday afternoon, it used the big inning to take down the Maroons in a 14-0 shutout. By the second inning, CNS already had a 7-0 edge thanks to four runs in the top of the first and three more tallies an inning later. But a seven-run sixth inning helped really put it away. As part of a 15-hit attack, Huff tripled twice, earning four RBIs. Gigliotti drove in two runs, while Meola, Salamone, Sydney O’Hara and Felicia Lattanzio and Sarah Salamone each had one RBI. Nandin posted her own triple. Salamone and O’Hara combined to pitch a four-hitter.
