Now firmly established in the state Class C top 10 — no. 8, to be precise — the Westhill girls lacrosse team had to prove it could stay there. The Warriors’ early hot streak nearly came to a halt during last Thursday’s game against Christian Brothers Academy, but enough was done in the end to edge past the Brothers 10-9. Westhill got most of its offense in the first half. Led by seniors Sam Marshall (four goals, one assist) and Mackenzie Rainone (three goals, one assist), the Warriors did enough there to push itself to a 7-4 lead at the break. Somewhere in the second half, Westhill went cold, and CBA began to rally behind Katie Webster and Taylor Poplawski, each of whom had three-goal hat tricks as Taylor Gait helped out with two goals. Still, the Warriors finished on top behind an experienced defense and goalie Morgan Roach, who finished with 10 saves. Emily Haggerty, Brenna Rainone and Claire Purcell each had single goals in support of Marshall and Mackenzie Rainone. Two days earlier, Westhill had pounded Homer 21-3, already owning a double-digit margin (13-2) by halftime and getting everybody on the roster involved. Marshall, with four goals and two assists, and Mackenzie Rainone, with three goals and four assists, set the tone as Annie O’Connor got three goals and three assists. Molly Kiggins, Caroline Buonocore and Brenna Rainone each found the net twice, with Haggerty, Lauren Wolfe and Erika Eipp each getting one goal and one assist.
