As it plunged into the heart of its OHSL Liberty division slate, the Marcellus softball team quickly went to the front of the line. While most league foes sat out last Monday’s rain and cold wind, the Mustangs made the short drive to Austin Park and rallied past archrival Skaneateles 10-1. For a while, it looked to be trouble, as Skaneateles pitcher Zoe Hilpl solved the Mustang hitters over the first four innings. But in the top of the fifth, Marcellus got to Hilpl for five runs. Jesse Mannahan led off with a triple, then scored on Bailey Donovan’s single. Gina Cardarelli and Lyssa Filtch followed with singles that put Marcellus ahead 2-1, and Sophie Jackson capped it with a three-run home run. Marcellus then added a run in the sixth and four runs in the top of the seventh, just to be sure. Jackson’s home run was just one of 14 Marcellus hits on the afternoon. Donovan drove in two runs. Filtch and Emily Hunt each had one RBI. Meanwhile, pitcher Gina Cardarelli gave up a second-inning run, but nothing more in a complete-game, three-hit effort. Cadarelli also had three hits at the plate as Jackson, Hunt and Marissa Bankey got two hits apiece. Two days later, on a chilly and wet afternoon in East Syracuse, Cardarelli notched the first no-hitter of her varsity career in a 3-0 victory over Bishop Grimes. During the gem, Cardarelli walked just three Cobras hitters, but struck out 13 as she lowered her earned run average to 0.23. Meanwhile, Jackson continued to tear it up at the plate, getting three of her team’s six hits, including two doubles, plus an RBI as Hunt and Marissa Bankey also drove in runs.
