Just about the only way any team can top an undefeated season is to try and pull it off once more.
That is what the Fayetteville-Manlius golf girls have in mind as the 2009 season starts following a 2008 that included an unbeaten regular season, plus the Section III team title.
With 14 girls on its varsity roster (just one of them a senior), the Hornets began last Tuesday at Butternut Creek with a strong effort against Rome Free Academy, beating the Black Knights 147-171.
Alex Seabury, already a proven veteran even though she’s a sophomore, covered nine holes in 32 shots, four shots better than teammate Maria Mintskovsky, who tied RFA’s Marissa Feole for second place. Lela Feldmeier shot a 39, with Sara Simons adding a 40.
F-M then went to Pine Hills on Wednesday afternoon and again posted low scores in a 141-181 romp over Oswego.
Seabury shot a 33, just two shots ahead of Mintskovsky’s 35. Simons improved to a 36, with Feldmeier adding a 37. All of them beat Oswego’s Mallorie Shannon, who led the Buccaneers with a 41.
Opening with each other, rivals Christian Brothers Academy and Jamesville-DeWitt engaged in a chilly match at Lafayette Hills, with the Brothers beating the Red Rams 183-217.
CBA’s Mary Fletcher shot a 41, with teammate Liz Webber adding a 46 and Sarah Kitts producing a 47. J-D’s Lindsey Sherling led her side with a 51 as Yvonna Jones and Kara Capistraw each shot 54.
In a local boys duel, Bishop Grimes beat Manlius-Pebble Hill by one shot, 239-240. The Cobras’ John Zapisek and the Trojans’ Dan Blanck each shot 40 at Tecumseh Club, where Killian Hartough added a 43, two shots better than MPH’s Mike Kardjian.
