A town-wide dodgeball tournament is planned for Thursday April 30 at Shove Park, the collaboration between Camillus Parks and Recreation Department intern David Ellis and David Vermilya, of The Town Shop Youth Center. The Town Shop began monthly dodgeball games this winter at East Hill Elementary, where it was always a hit. “It was hugely popular,” Vermilya said. “We were seeing 60 to 80 kids every time we played, so it was a little bit overwhelming for the East Hill Elementary gym.” Ellis, a SUNY Cortland student, needed to organize a special event as part of his internship requirement. After attending a few of the Town Shop’s dodgeball events, he teamed up with Vermilya to coordinate the First Annual Dodgeball Tournament. As of Friday, Ellis said no one had signed up at Shove Park, but he was confident that most people who want to play will show up the night of the tournament. The rules
The tournament is open to anyone over 13, but for every player age 18 or over a team must have at least one player under 16, to keep the playing field fair, Ellis said. Additionally, each team may only have three plays age 18 or over. Teams of 10 will play tournament-style; players without a team will be matched up the day of the game. Prizes will be given for tournament winners and for best costumes. The first game will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday April 30; spectators welcome.
Register for free at the Parks and Recreation Department at Shove Park or at the Town Shop, Main Street in the village.
