Mixing its usual domination of distance running with some key points elsewhere, both of the Fayetteville-Manlius track and field teams passed a major test last Tuesday with a sweep of Rome Free Academy. In the closer girls meet, the Hornets beat the Black Knights 74-67, with Jessica Marini taking the 400-meter hurdles (1:03.8) and teaming with Molly Malone, Heather Martin and Natalie Alibrandi to take the 4×400 relay in 4:21.8. Malone, on her own, needed 4:40.7 to run 1,500 meters, as Gennie Ariotti took the 3,000-meter run (10:55.0) and Courtney Chapman covered 800 meters in 2:28.8. Hannah Luber, Meaghan Anklin, Katie Sischo and Kathryn Fanning combined to win the 4×800 relay in 10:22. With RFA dominating in the sprints and most of the field events, Martin stepped in to win the long jump, going 14 feet 8 inches. Erika Davin tied Kelley Benfey in the high jump, each of them clearing 4 feet 6 inches. F-M’s boys team got a bit more room at the top, beating RFA 76-65. It started with Alex Hatz, Mark McGurrin, Ben Sargrad and Joe Hartnett needing 8:38 to run the 4×800. Jon Cico covered the mile in 4:52, as Andrew Roache took the 800 (2:16.6) and Owen Strong ran 3,200 meters in 10:32. Jordan Foster broke through with a winning 400-meter time of 55.4 seconds. Tyler Rhinehart cleared 11 feet to prevail in the pole vault, as Hornets teammate Chris Ruggeri won the high jump, clearing 5 feet 8 inches. RFA’s Anthony DeJean ran 100 meters in a swift 10.5 seconds and also took the 200-meter dash (22.5 seconds) and long jump (21 feet 8 1/2 inches) before it was done. Three days later, the Hornets swept again, this time against Nottingham, notching a 102-35 win on the girls side and 100-41 on the boys side. Marini won three girls events, including the 400 (1:02.5), 400 hurdles (1:07.3) and triple jump, where she went 30 feet 7 inches. She also teamed with Malone, Martin and Alibrandi to claim the 4×400 relay in 4:25.8. On her own, Martin won twice, running the 200 in 27.8 seconds and unleashing a long jump of 15 feet 6 inches. Chapman won the 800 (2:27.2) and, in the 1,500, finished just behind Malone, who won in 4:38.3. Anklin ran 3,000 meters in 12:34.2 after teaming with Luber, Fanning and Katie Sischo to take the 4×800 relay in 11:14. Davin cleared 5 feet in the high jump, as Amanda Saunders (7 feet) won the pole vault. Tammy Gould (shot put, 80 feet 9 inches) and Jhoville Pommells (30 feet 11 inches) swept the throwing events. In the 100-meter hurdles, Isabel Carapella (18.0 seconds) prevailed. Molly Levy took the 100-meter dash (13.9 seconds), combining with Saunders, Sophia Sorrentino and Danielle McCrohan to earn first place in the 4×100 relay in 54.8 seconds. F-M’s boys team featured several multiple winners, including Hatz, who ran the mile in 4:46.2 and the 3,200 in 9:18.6. Hatz, Sargrad, Hartnett and McGurrin claimed the 4×800 in 9:16.5. Hartnett also helped Foster, Stephen Kraus and Vinny Nguyen take the 4×400 in 3:50.5. Mike Matonse earned first in both the 110 high hurdles (17.3 seconds) and 400 hurdles (1:02.5), while Ruggeri cleared 5 feet 8 inches in the high jump and unleashed a top triple jump of 40 feet 2 inches. Karl Thompson had a winning discus toss of 128 feet 2 inches. Again winning the pole vault, Rhinehart cleared 10 feet 6 inches, moving over to help Matonse, Almir Alemic and Ryan Jones to win the 4×100 in 47.46 seconds. Jones earned first in the 200 (24.8 seconds as Roache improved his 800 time to 2:08.1.
