By the time the spring break ended, the Westhill girls lacrosse team had a great chance to establish itself as one of the clear Section III Class C championship favorites. The Warriors passed the first test last Tuesday, going to Marcellus and leading most of the way in a 16-11 decision over the Mustangs. Westhill bult the margin in the first half, working its way to a 9-4 lead. As the pace quickened in the second half, the Warriors’ defense struggled, but still managed to answer back every time Marcellus tried to eat into its deficit. Brenna Rainone set a fast pace with five goals and one assist. Close behind them, Annie O’Connor and Mackenzie Rainone each scored three times, with O’Connor adding an assist. Erika Eipp had two goals and two assists as Caroline Buonocore also found the net twice. Sam Marshall posted one goal and Emily Haggerty gained a pair of assists. On the Mustangs’ side, Kate Gosson and Meghan Connors posted three-goal hat tricks, while Nora Barry and Stephanie O’Rourke earned two goals apiece. Denise Johns backed them up with one goal and two assists. Still, Westhill goalie Morgan Roach stopped them enough times to earn 11 saves.
