All the Christian Brothers Academy baseball team did in 2008 was earn a Section III Class B championship and go all the way to the state final four. Wanting to go back — and do even better — the Brothers made an immediate statement of strength last Tuesday when it went to Mexico and bashed the Tigers 11-1. Led by Cody O’Connor, who is going to LeMoyne College next year, the Tigers are one of the main threats to CBA in the OHSL Freedom division, but it sure didn’t seem that way here. Through four innings, Mike Kitts and his Mexico counterpart on the mound, Jon Silva, traded shutouts, keeping it 0-0 as the tension built. Silva would crack first, though, as CBA got to him for five runs in the top of the fifth. In all, three Tiger pitchers tried, in vain, to stop the Brothers as it added six more runs in the next two innings and had 16 hits overall. Pat Wiese and Bryant Moore, with three RBIs apiece, led the Brothers’ late offensive push. Sean McGraw and Steve LaBerge each drove in two runs. Meanwhile, Kitts continued to be masterful on the mound, surrendering just four hits against O’Connor and the rest of Mexico’s potent lineup.
