Even before the mid-point of April, the Cazenovia boys lacrosse team had generated plenty of excitement through a pair of overtime victories. Now the trick is to take that momentum from a 3-0 start and try to earn a bigger win Saturday, against defending Section III Class C champion Skaneateles. This follows Tuesday’s game against Homer at the Fenner Street complex where a second-half comeback nearly got wasted — but the Lakers still beat the Trojans 10-9 in overtime, the exact same score by which they beat Westhill (also in OT) a week earlier. Homer dominated early, blitzing Cazenovia and grabbing a 5-2 lead by the end of the first quarter. Though it slowed down and the Lakers’ defense vastly improved, it still trailed, 6-3, going into the break. Whatever was adjusted at halftime seemed to work, as Cazenovia took over in the third period, putting up four unanswered goals and seizing a 7-6 lead. They would trade goals throughout the fourth quarter, but ahead 9-8, the Lakers watched as Homer’s Aaron Darr converted late in regulation to make it 9-9, forcing the OT. But they had reached the Lakers’ comfort zone — and just 1:37 into that extra period, Justin Hoffman fired a shot past Trojans goalie Paul Zimmerman to win it. Prior to that, Zimmerman had recorded 18 saves. For the day, Hoffman had two goals and two assists as Chad Dorrance put up three goals and Mike McGinnis also scored twice. Brett Axelson, Seth Goldacker and Sean Cannizzaro had one goal apiece. Despite Ben Bowers’ 16 saves, Homer teammates Carl Zimmerman and Paul Armideo led their side with matching three-goal hat tricks.
