Bent on reclaiming the Section III Class AA crown it ceded to rival Cicero-North Syracuse a season ago, the Liverpool softball team displayed lots of offense in winning its first three games of 2009. It started with a doubleheader last Friday against Edison Tech, from Rochester, in which the Warriors earned a sweep. One game was a 13-2 decision where the Warriors erupted for eight runs in the first inning, all the support pitcher Erin Squairs would need to get the win. Emily Dumas, Tiffany Sampere and Clara Burke each had two RBIs, with Jen Maloney also driving in a run. Abby Romano had her team’s lone triple. In the other game, Sampere’s one-hit shutout pitching produced a 1-0 victory, the lone run coming in the bottom of the fourth as the Warriors prevailed again. From there, Liverpool moved on to face Oxford on Saturday and, again, dominated at the plate in a 16-1 romp. Before Oxford could settle down, the Warriors put across 10 runs in the first inning alone, plus a five-run third inning just to be sure. As part of a 13-hit attack, Romano tripled and earned two RBIs. Dumas, Beth Lamison, Katie Bresnahan and Stephanie VanDusen matched that two-RBI output as Sara Tram and Coryn Curtis also earned RBIs. Squairs threw a complete-game one-hitter.
