As it takes on every challenge thrown at them, the West Genesee girls lacrosse team passed an important milestone on the first night in April. The Wildcats’ win streak, built through back-to-back state Class A titles, reached 50 games last Wednesday night in Camillus as it fought past Section V power Honeoye Falls-Lima by a score of 10-7. HF-L reached the state Class C semifinals in 2008, falling to Skaneateles, and saw just two seniors graduate from that team. So WG knew it would not be easy. Sure enough, every time it had the ball, the Cougars tried to control the game’s tempo, employing long possessions to keep the Wildcats from utilizing its overwhelming speed to pile up quick goals. So when it went to halftime, WG only led 5-3, a far cry from the 7-0 start it had used to whip Skaneateles in its March 26 opener. Even when the Wildcats did attack, it could not consistently find the net against a stubborn HF-L defense. Goalie Emily Stankaitis proved tough, too, earning 14 saves. Still, the Wildcats finished in front, pushed there by a balanced attack where Morgan Corso (three goals), Karlyn Tupper (two goals, two assists) and Bre Hudgins (two goals, one assist) led the way. Katey Hart and Kellyn Savage each had one goal and one assist, with Maria DiFato also scoring. WG was home again Saturday night to face Liverpool, kicking off a week-long series of early-season showdowns with fellow Class A contenders. Here, the Wildcats battled for a while but pulled away to beat the Warriors 13-4. With chilly temperatures and a constant wind, WG needed some time to get its offense moving, and with Liverpool dictating the tempo, the Wildcats only had a 4-2 edge at the break. Fully warmed up, WG took charge in the second half behind veterans like Hudgins, who had three goals and two assists, and Corso, who also scored three times. Right behind them, DiFato had two goals and two assists, while Tupper earned a goal and three assists. Hart, Savage, Bridget Alberts, Kara Datellas and Lauren Michaels each scored, too, as goalie Nicole Greco stopped nine of the 13 shots he faced. On Tuesday night, WG is home to face Fayetteville-Manlius before a big Thursday trip to Baldwinsville, who has already won its first three games.
