In a short amount of time, the Jamesville-DeWitt boys lacrosse team hopes to be winning on a consistent basis, just as it has done throughout recent history. And in its second outing of 2009, the Red Rams did find the win column, held off Christian Brothers Academy 12-11 in the only meeting this season between the two neighbors. Both teams reached the sectional finals a year ago. And both of them lost — J-D to Carthage in Class B, CBA to Skaneateles in Class C. The Rams were 0-2, having lost to LaFayette 8-4 two days before confronting CBA, so it was bent on avoiding a three-game skid. With the rain pounding down, J-D seized the early lead, only to bog down in a tight first half where neither side could get a lot of offense going. Up 5-4 at the break, the Rams turned up its pressure — and took off in the third quarter, doubling its output and building the margin to 10-6 by the time they reached the final period. Showing its own early-season mettle, CBA fought back, pulling within one, but unable to get the goal that would force overtime. Mostly, J-D had a three-pronged attack. Jake Bratek, with three assists to go with his pair of goals, fed it to Eric DeJohn, who scored four times, and Colin Short, who had three goals and one assist. Mac Keehfus, Cam Stone and Jeff Sicera each scored once. Nate Frechette had a part in more than half of CBA’s scoring plays, with four goals and two assists. Casey Lasda and Jared DePalma each found the net twice, while Jeff Gildemeyer, Matt Dugan and David Biegler had one goal apiece. CBA actually out-shot J-D, but Red Rams goalie Gordie Gehring made sure his team hung on to win, picking up 20 saves, twice the total of the Brothers’ Jake Stevenson. Meanwhile, the J-D girls team hosted Tully last Friday afternoon and proved solid on both ends of the field, beating the Black Knights by a score of 15-9. All of J-D’s damage came in the first half, when it attacked and scored at virtual will against Tully and didn’t stop until it had a comfortable 11-3 lead. Deep and balanced, the Rams had six different players — Meredith Howe, Ashriel West, Taylor Bierwagen, Molly Maroney, Liz Beville and Lauren Swan — each get two goals. Beville added three assists, with Howe earning two assists. Emily Elbers and Tory Nies each had one goal and one assist, with Emily Johnson also scoring.
