For its opening act of the 2009 season, the Westhill softball team immediately got engaged in the sort of contest that tests one’s willpower. And the defending Section III Class B champion Warriors passed that test, needing a run in the top of the eighth inning to beat West Genesee 1-0 in Camillus. Many stars are back from Westhill’s 2008 title team, none more important than pitcher Toni Secreti, who would find herself in a fierce mound duel with the Wildcats’ Ashley Amidon. Over the course of seven regulation innings, Secreti kept WG hitters in check — but Amidon did the same against the Westhill bats, a 0-0 duel that stretched into extra frames. Finally, in the top of the eighth, the Wildcats blinked, as Shannon Flattery’s double brought home the game’s only run. Brittany Kizer and Jordan Arsenault also doubled in the Warriors’ winning effort. Meanwhile, Secreti surrendered five hits, but they were all singles. What’s more, Westhill did not commit an error, while WG got three errors. As this was going on, Bishop Ludden flattened Tully 14-0, doing so with pitchers Grace Rooney and Korky Kibling combining on a no-hitter. No doubt, Rooney (who pitched at CBA before transferring to Ludden) and Kibling were helped by error-free defense on Ludden’s side, plus an attack that got four runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings. Rooney yielded a potent bat, smacking a home run and double and finishing with three RBIs. Kibling and Kim Balla also drove in runs, though many of Ludden’s tallies came from a porous Tully defense that picked up nine errors.
