Even before taking off for California during the April break, the Baldwinsville girls lacrosse team will have a good sense of where it stands, relative to all the other Section III Class A contenders. The Bees’ gauntlet of tough non-league games kicked off Wednesday afternoon, at home, with a solid wire-to-wire effort that resulted in a 13-8 win over Fayetteville-Manlius. Having already played once, B’ville held an advantage over F-M, a 2008 Class A finalist breaking in seven new starters for its season opener. Still, the Hornets took the early edge, 3-1, as Sarah Lux scored in the game’s opening minute and Taylor Robinson landed back-to-back goals. Soon enough, though, the Bees’ aggressive attack would start to stir. After tying the game, 3-3, B’ville went in front for good when Mackenzie Kjerstad and Quincey Spagnoletti scored within a span of 50 seconds, causing F-M to use a time-out. Though the Hornets twice pulled within a goal during the half, late tallies by Jen Fabian and Lauren Roberts made it 9-6 as they went to the break. B’ville’s defense blanked F-M for more than 16 minutes of time, and B’ville doubled its margin to 12-6 in the process as Spagnoletti notched two more goals, giving her four for the afternoon. When F-M tried to rally late, the Bees did a superb job possessing the ball throughout the game’s last 10 minutes, giving up offense to secure a win. Behind Spagnoletti, Kjerstad, Roberts, Fabian and Kara Moschetti each scored twice, while Erika Bulken also landed a goal. Casey Chiesa made several key point-blank stops on her way to 11 saves, one more than F-M newcomer Caroline Trpecvski. Robinson (three goals), Mary Hartzheim and Morgan Axenfeld (two goals each) led the Hornets’ attack.
