Though the circumstances, methods and participants may have changed, the end result — Skaneateles beating rival Marcellus in girls lacrosse — remains the same. Nearly 10 months after clashing with the Section III Class C championship on the line, the Lakers and Mustangs met up again Monday night. This time around, Skaneateles didn’t need any kind of last-minute rally. Instead, it had to fend one off to win a 13-11 decision over the host Mustangs. Certainly, it helped the Lakers that it had already played once, a March 26 loss to West Genesee, while Marcellus had not played yet. Thus, the Lakers had a greater comfort level as the game got underway, giving up the game’s first goal, but answering with a trio of tallies to move in front 3-1. Even as Marcellus came back to tie it 4-4, it could not reclaim the lead thanks to a series of stellar stops from Laker goalie Heather Mullen. For the night, she would have 18 saves, and look far more comfortable than Mustang counterpart Kate McCarthy, who twice ventured out of the net, only to have turnovers lead to easy Skaneateles goals. Fired up by Mullen’s great work, the Lakers took charge late in the first half with four unanswered goals, capped by Maddy Morrissey converting on a fast break with 3.7 seconds left in the half. That momentum carried over into the second half, where Katherine Pille, Lindsay Angelillo and Aly Davis all scored to make it 11-4, the game perilously close to a rout. Marcellus, to its credit, did not quit. It started forcing turnovers and finishing off plays, using a 5-0 run of its own to pull within two, 11-9, with more than six minutes to play. Skaneateles, despite all the new starters, maintained its poise as the Mustangs charged. Pille hit what turned out to be the game-winner less than a minute later, and Shelby McNeilly converted with 2:08 left to add some cushion. For the night, Pille scored three times, adding a pair of assists. Morrissey had two goals and two assists, with McNeilly, Davis and Diane Vitkus each having two-goal outings of their own. Angelillo had one goal and one assist as Erin Callahan also scored. Leea Sinay, with three goals, led a balanced Mustang attack where Nora Barry, Stephanie O’Rourke and Kate Gosson each put up two goals.
