Warm as it was, it still couldn’t match the temperature of the Fayetteville-Manlius boys lacrosse team went it ventured south for its 2009 season opener. The Hornets, with high expectations for what this spring could offer, did little to discourage that thought in last Saturday’s trip to Union-Endicott, dominating from start to finish in a 24-1 romp of the Tigers. F-M has not won a Section III title since 1993. But with six starters, including Matt Taylor, Mike O’Neil and Mike Poppleton, back from a team that went 15-5 a season ago before falling to West Genesee in the Class A semifinals, there’s reason to think the drought will finally end. At the very least, the Hornets showed that it could toy with an opponent like Union-Endicott, as it picked up 12 goals, an average of one goal per minute, in the first quarter alone. By halftime, it was 18-0, and everyone on the roster would get a chance to play. Even in limited minutes, Taylor picked up five goals and five assists. Ari Waffle made a strong varsity debut with three goals and four assists as O’Neil and Will Reznikov each earned three-goal hat tricks, too. Poppleton joined Matt Klepper, Brendan Englert and Jeff Shields, each of them scoring twice. Andrew Murphy and Tim Beach had single tallies as Ron Caputo, Jake Cooper, Chris Anklin, Roy Simmons, Justin DePalma, Jim Dittmer, Chris Walsh and Glen Trachtenberg all got credit for assists. F-M will continue to tune up on Saturday at Rome Free Academy before next Tuesday’s key early-season test against West Genesee.
