Administrators and teachers at Burton Street Elementary School are working to extend the kindergarten day to a full-day schedule for three out of five weekdays. “It can be done, it’s just going to extend a couple areas a little bit” said Mary-Anne Macintosh, principal of Burton Street Elementary. “We’ll have to be very creative with the schedule.” Macintosh presented the basic framework of a plan to extend the kindergarten day at last week’s Cazenovia school board meeting. Under a full-day schedule, special areas (music, art and physical education) that the kindergarten teachers have been teaching would be taken over by special area teachers who have already been teaching the first through fourth grade students. The area that requires the most creativity is physical education classes for students, Macintosh said. “Our [phyical education] area will be used every second of the day,” she said. Under one possible arrangement, two physical education teachers would teach three kindergarten sections simultaneously. The full-day schedule could cut some transportation costs and be of academic benefit to the students, said Macintosh. “The kindergarten teachers are in full support of this because it does add to the academic day for the students and it would also help with possibly decreasing transportation as the kindergarten students would go home with the first through twelfth grade students.” Superintendent Robert Dubik thanked Macintosh and the committee for developing the new plan, noting that it “wasn’t an easy task.”
